Lost or Damaged Baggage
Damage, delayed and loss of baggage should be reported to Malawian Airlines representative at the airport of your destination immediately after the arrival of your flight and before leaving the baggage claim area to secure a file reference number.
Malawi Airlines shall not be liable for destruction, loss or damage of baggage caused by:-
- Defects in the material of baggage itself or aging after use;
- Minor dents, cuts, scratches, scuffs, dents, dirt and stains;
- Protruding parts such as cover/straps/hooks/belts & lock;
- Damage due to over-packing or inadequate packing of baggage;
- Damage or pilferage resulting from random search of security or other safety inspections of each country.
Follow up on Baggage Claims
Malawi Airlines sincerely regrets the delay in tracing your baggage. Every effort will be made to locate and restore your bag. The total allowed tracing period is 25 days from the date of incident. During this time the automated tracing system will match the profile created for your bag with similar type of bags that remain unclaimed at various other airports all around the world.
Great emphasis is given to correct Tag Details, Address on the missing bag, and Brand Information of the Bag, Color and Type of bag, and Content of the Bag. It is mandatory that information enclosed in the profile is correct to the best of your knowledge.

Baggage Liability Limitations
Liability for loss or damage to baggage is limited unless a higher value is declared in advance when checking in the baggage and additional charges are paid. The Carrier would be liable for damage sustained in case of destruction of, or loss of or damage to checked baggage upon condition only that the event which caused the destruction, loss or damage took place on board the aircraft or during any period within which the checked baggage was in the charge of the Carrier. However, the Carrier is not liable to the extent that the damage resulted from the inherent defect, quality or vice of the baggage.
For all baggage claim settlement for missing, pilfered or damage, the Warsaw Convention may apply within the liability limits of 17 SDR (approximately USD 20) per kilogram for checked-in baggage and 332 SDR (approximately USD 400) for unchecked or hand luggage. For unchecked Baggage allowed on board, Carrier shall only be held liable in the event of a proven fault by the Carrier, its servants or agents.
Malawi Airlines shall not be liable for normal wear and tear such as scratches and dents. And also not liable for the loss of Jewelry, valuable items, money, cameras, phones, laptops and negotiable documents contained in a checked-in baggage.
